STAR TESTING
Supplementary Test of Achievement in Reading
Island Bay School 2011

The Star Reading Tests are designed to supplement the assessments that teachers make about their pupils’ progress and achievement in reading.

It is important to keep in mind when using Star information that teachers also use running records and their own professional judgments to make overall reading assessments for you child. This is how teachers make their overall assessment of a child’s reading as indicated on the data sheet in your child’s portfolio.

STAR is a New Zealand norm referenced test designed for pupils in Year 3-9. For children in Year 3-6 there are four short sub-tests, each of which assesses different aspects of children’s reading ability.

When a score is obtained it is converted to a stanine. Stanines are used to compare an individual student’s achievement with the results obtained by a national reference sample chosen to represent a certain year level. Stanines divide the distribution of results for a year group into nine categories. Most students, when compared with their own year level, achieve around stanines four, five, and six. Stanines seven, eight, and nine represent comparatively high achievement for a year group  Stanines one, two, and three indicate comparatively low achievement.
