ISLAND BAY SCHOOL Newsletter 3
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to James Picken and Amelia O’Shaughnessy both in K4
After School Care
Island Bay After School care currently has places available every day. We offer baking, ball games, board games and art and crafts etc. We have an all weather venue with plenty of space to run around. For more details, please phone our Supervisor on 383 9618.
Powhiri Welcome
What a wonderful powhiri welcome on Wednesday! Thank you to both new folk and current parents for attending the celebration. I enjoyed the cup of tea afterwards and the opportunity to get to know a number of new families in our school community.
School Picnic
We have re-scheduled a school picnic at Shorland Park for Friday 17 February. We aim to catch a sunny day. We will leave school at 11am and aim to return by 2.45pm. Please do join us. We were disappointed that poor weather forced the cancellation of our end of year picnic so fingers crossed for a gorgeous day.
2012 Staff
Do visit our school website to view our staff for 2012. It will help you connect a face to a name.

Parent help please:
We are looking for a small group of parents who could help us throughout the year with Physical Education at Island Bay School. There are jobs that need to be done on a regular basis (pumping balls, tidying the P.E. shed, sorting uniforms etc) and also jobs that need to be done before specific events. If you can help in anyway, please email Kendra.
Parent Tutors in Reading Programme
The Parent Tutors in Reading Programme was so successful last year that we would like to continue with the programme again this year.
The programme runs for 10 weeks, with Parent Tutors being timetabled for one afternoon a week. During their afternoon they hear five children read a range of different books. This year we would like to use the programme throughout the school.
All the Parent Tutors receive training and ongoing support from a teacher. This year both Noeline and Andrea Bailey will be supporting the tutors.
If you would like to be involved in the programme as a Parent Tutor please email Noeline - noelinepoulopoulos@islandbay.school.nz or contact her on 939-3010, extension 307.
Home and School Association Annual General Meeting
The Island Bay Home and School AGM will be held on Monday March 5th at 7.30pm in the school staffroom. Please note the date in your diary; there will be more information to follow.
School Fair – Deli Stall Jam Making
It may be very early in the school year, but the Fair organisation never stops! For those of you new to the school, we hold a highly successful fair at the beginning of November each year, run by the Home and School Association. Among the many wonderful
stalls is our world-famous-in-the-Bay Deli Stall, and now is jam making time!
If anyone is willing or able to make jam (or contribute a few jars if you’re making your own), or has access to (or excess) summer fruits or berries, please contact Michelle (ph 383 8955 email michelle.birch66@gmail.com ) or Sally (ph 9388488 email sally_garrity@paradise.net.nz )
Indoor Plants
If you happen to have any indoor plants you are tired of or that need re-potting and a new lease of life, they would be greatly appreciated at school to beautify and oxygenate our environment.
Please contact Andrea andreabailey@islandbay.school.nz
