Te Röpu Whanau o Te Kura o Tapu te Ranga – Whanau Group
Tënä koutou
We are a group of Island Bay families focused on strengthening tikanga Maori - in our kids and ourselves; within the school and within the community.
We do this through whakawhanaungatanga – building community and honouring people where they are, who they are, what they are.
Meetings are a chance to get together, to learn and practice te reo and tikanga (mihi, pepeha, karakia, waiata etc). No prior knowledge is required – just enthusiasm. We spend time singing, playing guitar/ukulele, talking and sharing kai.
We focus our energies on 4 core events through the school year:
- pöhiri (at the start of each term);
-Matariki (Aotearoa New Year);
-noho marae (towards the end of the year), and
- poroporoaki (at the year’s end).
Look out for meeting times in the school newsletter, or contact Maria Whiting at mariawhiting@islandbay.school.nz
We would love you to join us.

Translation: My strength is not the strength of one person but the strength of many.
Meaning: The individual draws on the support of others for his or her strength.
