Artist in Residence Programme - introducing Margaret Tolland

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

We are delighted to announce that Margaret Tolland will be joining us this term as our Artist in Residence. This is our first residency programme and it will provide opportunities for our students to learn from an experienced practising artist.

The aim of the Artist in Residency programme is for students to feel inspired by The Arts and to see the value in pursuing creative interests or careers in their futures.

Margaret is a full-time illustrator and artist with a background as a secondary school art teacher and art educator at Pataka Art + Museum. She has illustrated many children’s picture books, including ‘Fantail’s Quilt’, ‘Go, Green Gecko’ and ‘Watch out, Snail’ amongst others. Margaret is inspired by the unique endemic species of Aotearoa and creates beautifully detailed illustrations from her studies of these creatures.

Margaret is a strong advocate for conservation. During her 2019 residency at Marsden Collegiate College, Margaret created a series of works inspired by the conservation passions of staff and volunteers at Zealandia. She has also recently completed a mural at Zealandia.

Margaret will be working in the Learning Hub. She will run workshops with students as well as spend time on her own projects. During the residency at our school Margaret will be working on wetā paintings for her next book and a fantastic artwork for our school based on the names of our learning hubs.

Please drop by to say hello, Margaret is wonderfully friendly and would be more than happy to chat with you about her work. If you want to check out Margaret’s art her beautiful website has some examples of her work. Margaret will be with us for four weeks, starting on Monday 31st August. She will be working Monday-Thursday.
