Board of Trustees Update - March 2022

It has been a busy start to the year, with two themes dominating.

Like all other schools, Island Bay School has been preparing for life with active COVID-19 cases and the Board has worked closely with Deborah and her leadership team to make sure we have everything in place that we can – the right hybrid learning approaches, support for remote learners, policies, delegations, and a special sub-committee to respond at pace to any emerging needs. Happily, the school has been only lightly affected so far.

The Board would like to extend its special thanks to all the staff at the school, teaching and otherwise, who have been operating under bubble conditions (with limited contact with other syndicates and caregivers), with masks on all day, and with disrupted rolls. It has not been an easy working year so far and we, and the entire community, appreciate the mahi and the cheerful way you have coped so far.

The other theme is more administrative – with some much-needed work on drains and carpets being allocated to our long-term property plan, we have been able to set a realistic budget that hedges against staff being away and allows for some initiatives later in the year if things pan out.

We have also locked in our annual charter and set some goals for the school to meet, specifically in the areas of wellbeing, ākonga Māori outcomes, and reading.

This year marks the end of our current three year planning cycle and we will be asking for your input later in the year as we start to build a vision for the next three years.

Finally, it’s an election year for the Board. The election will be held in early September, so there’s plenty of time to think about standing.

A well-functioning Board has people from diverse backgrounds with a variety of skills and you don’t need any specific prior experience. The more representative of all our learners the better. If you would like to know more, please visit the School Board Elections website to read more or watch some videos, and you’re welcome to attend our meetings to find out what it’s like.
